Update: Sony has submitted a trailer on how to set up Passkey. We have embedded it below these lines.

PlayStation players link the PSN account to a mobile phone or other compatible device. When you log in, the security functions of the respective system take effect.

An example is Face ID, which Apple users can use to unlock their smartphone and, in the future, their PSN account. Facial recognition, fingerprint or a PIN are usually used as login methods.

Easy passkey setup

Setting up the master key isn't too difficult. To set up a passkey via smartphone, players must log in to the console and work their way to passkey setup in Account Settings » Users and Accounts » Account » Security.

During the process, a QR code is displayed that is scanned with the smartphone and leads to a website where players log in with the PSN account. After activating the passkey, you need to log out of the console and log in again using the passkey procedure.

By setting up the passkey procedure, Sony deactivates the login method using the traditional password, which attackers can no longer do anything with if they are lost. Two-factor authentication (2FA) via SMS will also be switched off.

Sony provides further details on setting up the login with a passkey on the PlayStation support page together. The company also addresses the question of what to consider if your smartphone is lost.

And if you don't own a PlayStation console:

What are passkeys?

Passkeys are an alternative to passwords to access various accounts on the Internet more securely. They are based on biometric data such as fingerprints or facial scans as well as PIN codes.

The management and synchronization of passkeys between devices is carried out automatically via a cloud service supported by the operating systems of smartphones or computers.

PlayStation's recommended passkey providers include iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password and Dashlane.
