Online forever? This could continue after active support ends

“Helldivers 2” is currently one of the most played co-op shooters on the PC and PlayStation 5. In a community dialogue on Discord, the developers of Arrowhead talked about their long-term plans for the surprise hit.

This week Sony gave us current sales figures for “Helldivers 2” and pointed out that the co-op shooter had sold more than twelve million copies by the beginning of May.

This led to the development of “Helldivers 2” for Sony the fastest-selling title at all. Shortly after the sales figures were revealed, Johan Pilestedt, the CEO of the responsible development team Arrowhead, answered questions from the community on Discord. Among other things, it was about the planned long-term support of the co-op shooter.

Given the commercial success, post-launch support is of course not expected to end in the foreseeable future. If Pilestedt has his way, then “Helldivers 2” should, in the best case scenario, “accompany us forever.” Ultimately, however, the decision as to how long the co-op shooter will be actively supported should rest with Sony or PlayStation.

Developers worry about the future

Even if those responsible at PlayStation decide at some point to end active support for “Helldivers 2”, according to Pilestedt, this does not necessarily mean the end for the co-op shooter. The same applies to the point at which Arrowhead has to draw a line under the title and move on to the next project.

As Pilestedt hinted, he's already thought about some of the possible scenarios for the future of Helldivers 2. When Arrowhead moves on to the next project and moves the developers away from “Helldivers 2,” automation of select features could ensure that the community is kept happy even without new updates and content.

As an example, the CEO of Arrowhead cited the position of Game Master, who actively influences the game and provides variety and additional excitement in the world of “Helldivers 2”. The developers could at some point automate this feature and other functions using AI, which would allow “Helldivers 2” to remain online with updates and new content even without active support.

The balancing will be improved again

In another community dialogue, Pilestedt recently admitted that Arrowhead is lagging behind in weapon balancing adjustments sometimes exaggerated and isolated weapons were defused too much. In the next few weeks, the developers would like to take another look at this area and make improvements accordingly.

“Hey, yeah, I think we went too far in some areas. I will speak to the team about the approach to compensation. It seems like every time someone finds something fun, the fun is removed from it,” Pilestedt said. The CEO of Arrowhead left it open when the next balancing updates can be expected.

“Helldivers 2” was released in February for the PC and PS5.
