One of the most important actors almost wasn't there

When we hear Lord of the Rings, we inevitably think of the star cast. Frodo Baggins was portrayed by Elijah Wood, Gandalf by Ian McKellen, Aragorn by Viggo Mortensen, Legolas by Orlando Bloom and Saruman by Christopher Lee. These and many more actors have helped the trilogy become something special.

But when it comes to casting, as is so often the case in the film industry, not everything always went according to plan. One of the actors we know all too well in his role, actually wanted to take on a completely different role. Orlando Bloom almost didn't appear in Lord of the Rings. Luckily, everything turned out differently.

At 16 years old at drama school

After Bloom moved to London at the age of 16, he enrolled in drama school and also worked as a supporting actor and extra. His first small role in a movie he had it in Wilde in 1997. Although Bloom only spoke one sentence there, he subsequently received offers for film and television – but actually turned them down in order to devote himself to his education first.

Two days before graduating from drama school, he received the information that his casting for The Lord of the Rings was successful. Orlando Bloom auditioned for the role of Faramir. However, Peter Jackson was of the opinion that he saw the perfect Legolas here.

The sensation is perfect. A new live-action Lord of the Rings film is officially in the works and will be hitting theaters soon.

Actor embodies favorite character

Orlando Bloom originally wanted to play Faramir, but he also had a lot in common with Legolas. He had the desire to be this character – which he generally was Favorite characters in the books what counts – performing well for the fans.

What would have happened if he had turned down the role he hadn't actually planned? Who would have portrayed Legolas? We know, for example, that the role of Gandalf (which was played by Ian McKellen) was actually intended for Sean Connery. But this one had the role rejected due to long filming.

The first part (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) was released in 2001. The Filming was supposed to last 18 months. From a purely financial perspective, it would certainly have been worth it for the actor. In 2002 he only appeared in Forrester – Found. This was followed in 2003 by appearances in the television series Freedom: A History of Us and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Forrester – Found it just once Grossed $80 million and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen $179 million.

The three parts of The Lord of the Rings together achieved a box office total of just under three billion US dollars. Sean Connery definitely has that missed a huge success and we're glad that Orlando Bloom didn't let that stop him from taking part in The Lord of the Rings, despite having a different role.
