Oh Splinter Cell, where are you?

Hello, dear friends of video games, consoles & gaming per se.: Instead of, as in the last episode of our gaming podcast, to discuss an entire genre, this time we have made it our mission to bring a series of games into the spotlight that otherwise likes to hide in the shadows. The PC Games Podcast with Numero 81 is about the venerable stealth video game series Splinter Cell, which has been cold-bloodedly ignored by Ubisoft for over ten years. The first part came in 2002 and can can be admired again in our retro special with video. The last part came in 2013 and the announced remake of the first part also seems to be in the distant future – it seems. Then already now rumors are raging, who predict a comeback around this year's summer events. About the big reveal of the new edition? Or even Splinter Cell 7?! We will of course clarify in the podcast whether there is any truth to the matter and why the series is urgently needed at the moment.

Our host Maci Naeem Cheema and co-host Michael Grünwald – huge fans of the series – reminisce and discuss Sam Fisher's possible comeback. Of course, it's also about the many qualities and low points of the entire series – and yes, there were a few of both. We hope you enjoy the podcast and feel free to write us in the comments what you think about the series, which parts you may have even played yourself and so on.

When is a new Splinter Cell coming to Playstation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC?

As already mentioned: Splinter Cell is one of the many legendary game series that got lost somewhere along the way in the modern upswing of the 2010s. Of course, this wasn't entirely without reason on Ubisoft's part and the sales figures were comparable in direct comparison with the company's own mega brands Assassin's Creed or Far Cry leaves something to be desired, yet it feels wrong that we've been mediocre Splinter Cell: Blacklist from 2013 were not allowed to experience another espionage excursion from games legend Sam Fisher.

But the long wait wasn't complete without a sign of life from the NSA agent. As has been known for a while, Ubisoft Montréal (and Ubisoft Toronto?) is working on a remake of the first part from 2002. Similar as with the new edition of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time But even with the spy title, the whole endeavor isn't really getting going – oh, Ubisoft. Recent rumors now claimthe big reveal is coming up for Ubisoft Forward in June.

What's going on at Ubisoft?

Our assessment: Due to the many failures (Skull & Bones and many other Ubisoft games), Ubisoft seems extremely insecure recently. With Assassin's Creed, for example, you take three different paths at once, that's how overwhelmed you seem to be. With Assassin's Creed Mirage you consciously take a step back to your roots while you go along Assassin's Creed Red The next open world epic after Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla is heading towards Japan. As if that wasn't enough, you also decide to use the current one Assassin's Creed: Witch to go new and innovative ways – something very chaotic, at least that's how it seems.

When it comes to brands with less sales power and more risky projects, the following strategy seems to be used: release a remake and first take your time to see how it is received by global players – which, by the way, also has the advantage that in the event of one success, a fresh team has already intensively dealt with the brand and its origins. Yeah, and then let's see what subsequent steps would make sense for the gaming brand. The problem is, none of them have come out yet, and so game fans have been in the dark for a decade now – and that doesn't just apply to Sam Fisher's adventures. This also applies to Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil and many other iconic Ubisoft brands. Let's hope that this finally changes in June, at least with the new edition of Splinter Cell.

“Man, I want stealth” – no problem! In the meantime, you can make do with one of these extremely successful stealth video games, luckily there are a few of them apart from Splinter Cell. We (actually podcast host Michael Grünwald, hehe) have the ten best stealth gameswhich you can still play well today, summarized and present our results to you in article and video form.
