Obsidian Entertainment: Reference to cross-platform role-playing

Obsidian Entertainment is looking for new employees to take part in the studio's projects. One of them is a “cross-platform RPG”. But what does that mean?

Out of the house Obsidian Entertainment comes the less popular “Fallout: New Vegas”. The developer later worked on games like “The Outer Worlds” and “Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire”.

Created after the studio was taken over by Microsoft “Grounded” and “Pentiment”, which initially launched for Xbox consoles and PC. This year, one followed Microsoft's multiplatform initiative the PS5 launch.

It will therefore be exciting to see how the upcoming games from Obsidian Entertainment will be structured. Job advertisements provide possible leads.

Cross-platform RPG based on Unreal Engine

Loud Gamerant the studio has advertised a position for a Senior Environment Artist. It's intended to help create “aesthetically pleasing environments for a cross-platform RPG.” The development is based on the Unreal Engine.

In this case, cross-platform does not necessarily mean that PlayStation consoles are included. The description could simply refer to Xbox and PC. But the latest releases of the studio's games on PS5 consoles suggest that Obsidian Entertainment and Microsoft have more in mind. After all, the Redmond team wants all players in the future, address them wherever they play.

Quite a few people are hoping for the latest one “Fallout” hype on a “New Vegas 2” or at least a project within the series – especially after Lex Luddy, editor-in-chief at Startmenu, told Giant Bomb emphasized, that there are “discussions about integrating Obsidian into another Fallout game.” However, Obsidian is said to shy away from such large-scale projects.

Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 in the works

First on the program is “Avowed”. The title is based on the “Pillars of Eternity” universe and is scheduled to launch in the second half of the year for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Given Microsoft Gaming's latest strategic direction, a later PS5 release wouldn't come as a surprise.

Another ongoing project is “The Outer Worlds 2”. Here too, only the Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms are currently mentioned. However, the question arose a year ago about the status of a PS5 version:



We'll probably find out more about Obsidian Entertainment's projects in June. Microsoft is hosting an Xbox showcasewhich is also becoming increasingly exciting for PS5 players.
