The boom in artificial intelligence has far-reaching consequences for gamers.
The graphics card manufacturer Nvidia expects that the global shortage of chips for graphics cards will last at least the whole year. CFO Colette Kress expressed this assessment during a conference call on the quarterly figures. This confirms what many in the gaming community had already feared: building a PC remains an expensive hobby.
Nvidia: That’s how bad the situation is for PC gamers
Kress explains: “As much as we would like to see more supply, we believe it will remain very tight for several quarters.” The situation could ease by the end of the year at the earliest, but it is too early to judge.
The reason for the bottleneck lies primarily in the hype surrounding artificial intelligence. The tech industry is investing heavily in the expansion of data centers, which require enormous amounts of high-performance chips for AI applications.
Since these data center chips are significantly more profitable for manufacturers like Nvidia, their production is prioritized. The production of chips for the consumer market, which includes graphics cards and game consoles, is taking a back seat (source: Reuters).
It’s also a tough (and expensive) time for console gamers
This demand pressure is leading to a shortage across the market. The direct consequences are felt not only by PC gamers, who continue to be confronted with high prices and poor availability, but also by the console market. Nintendo uses Nvidia chips for the Switch and is already thinking about raising the price of the Switch 2.
