What are we talking about?

In the Fallout series, we learn that Shady Sands, the capital of the New Californian Republic (NCR), was destroyed by a nuclear bomb. A timeline seen in Vault 4 can also be read as if the bomb had fallen in 2077.

However, that would contradict Fallout: New Vegas: The destruction of the city is never mentioned here, even though the NCR is one of the most important factions. A dialogue also indirectly confirms that Shady Sands still exists.

What does Todd Howard say?

The idea that Shady Sands is destroyed a few years before the events of the series did not come from Todd Howard himself. According to him, it was an idea of the two showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. With the help of the Bethesda developers, careful attention was paid to ensuring that everything fit into the canon:

We are very careful with the timeline. Sometimes there can be some confusion. But everything that happened in the previous games, including New Vegas, happened. […]

All I can say is, […] that the bombs fell right after the events of New Vegas.

So the destruction of Shady Sands didn't happen in 2077, but sometime shortly after the end of New Vegas in 2281.

You can find out exactly when the story of the individual Fallout titles actually takes place in our article on the official timeline above.
