Off to Kutnenberg

With Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the developers at Warhorse want to create a game like the first part was supposed to be. However, a lack of resources and experience stood in the way of their vision at the time. The studio, which once started with eleven developers, has now grown to 250 people. The ambitions for the successor are correspondingly great. The game is significantly larger, not just in terms of the game world, but in terms of story staging and other game elements. More than five hours of cutscenes help tell the longer and more epic story of Heinrich.

The open game world is twice as large as its predecessor. One of the locations is a modern-day nature reserve, which in German is simply called the Bohemian Paradise. The low mountain range is best known for its impressive rock formations. As a contrast to the impressive landscape, this time we are also going to a really large medieval metropolis, Kutná Hora. In the late Middle Ages, today's Kutna Hora was the second largest city in Bohemia after Prague and, thanks to silver mining and coinage, one of the richest economic centers in the country.

When designing the game world, it was also important for the developers to show that the Middle Ages were not so dark, despite their nickname as the Dark Ages. Kutnenberg also shows its colorful side. After all, a city in the Middle Ages wouldn't just consist of mud, dirt and people dying of epidemics in the streets. The landscapes can also be seen in the excerpts shown so far with very chic environments. For the presentation By the way, the developers remain loyal to the CryEngine.

Heinrich's adventure continues

As a player, you once again take on the role of Heinrich von Skalitz, the son of a blacksmith, who involuntarily became a fighter and adventurer due to the events of the first part. He is the squire and friend of the young Lord Hans. In an effort to avenge the murder of Heinrich's parents, the two friends become involved in a dangerous adventure full of discovery, betrayal and the search for their own purpose in life. In the end, our hero even takes on Sigismund, the red fox, the King of Hungary.

It is important to the developers that Heinrich, as a young hero, can still be shaped by the player and is not forced too much into predefined characteristics. This also applies to the combat system, where the team once again sets a high standard for realistic medieval battles. The player should perceive every opponent on the battlefield as a threat and fight for his life. In addition to the obligatory sword, Heinrich can also use crossbows and early forms of firearms this time. The former can also be fired while riding.

A large-scale siege of a castle can also be seen in the announcement trailer. Of course, trebuchets, ladders and other equipment are also used. However, it is not clear from the scenes how much of this we as players actively experience or whether it is just cutscenes.

When will Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 be released?

However, you don't just have to rely on Heinrich's martial arts. As an old-school role-playing game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 wants to give the player various options to survive the adventure and solve problems. If you want, you can be an eloquent hero who can maneuver his way out of many problems with a quick mouth. Alternatively, you can embody a thief who prefers to operate from stealth. But don't get caught, because the inhabitants of the game world remember your actions and react to Heinrich accordingly.

The developers also give an example of this in the presentation, in which Heinrich runs drunk and naked through the streets. People will react to it and as a player you can react to it – in different ways. Over time, people's reactions to Heinrich should change again and again in small details and adapt to his behavior.

At the end of the presentation we get a brief insight into the game's soundtrack. The music is once again written by Czech composer Jan Valta. The piece, performed in Kutná Hora Cathedral, already had a good medieval atmosphere, with powerful instrumental sounds and a mixed choir. We will find out later this year whether all the elements of the game work together perfectly and whether Heinrich's adventure lives up to the developers' ambitions. It should start on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X towards the end of 2024.
