Effective and cheap
Noise reduction is so effective that you don’t have to pay extra for it.
Jämte True Wireless has active noise reduction (ANC or noise reduction) now basically standard even in cheaper headsets. It works by microphones on the outside of the headset picking up ambient sounds. By phase-shifting sound, you can extinguish it and make noise disappear. The quality of the result varies from noticeable to breathtaking, and in recent years the quality of noise cancellation even in cheaper headsets has improved continuously.
Especially in the most expensive headsets from Sony, Apple, Samsung and Huawei, the active noise reduction is impressive, and for the most part you notice a clear difference in the surrounding noise with the function on or off. The sound quality when listening to music is not usually audibly affected, and the battery life is not usually affected very much either.
Active noise reduction is thus a function that you no longer have to pay extra for, but you often get better noise reduction the more expensive headset you choose. The question then is how much it is worth paying extra for. Part of all ambient noise already disappears if you get an over-ear headset or one with rubber pads. And if you use the headset mainly when you listen to music and like to listen at high volume, you will almost never notice the noise reduction. Active noise reduction is also of no use during phone calls if you primarily use a headset for that.
On the other hand, you can listen at a lower volume and protect your hearing if you have noise reduction, and if you have such a headset, it is not unusual to start using it in new ways, for example wearing it in noisy environments without listening to music, just to create a quieter bubble. Especially if you work in an office environment with noisy fans, or drive a lot in noisy vehicles, you will notice a difference.
