No Sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3, but Exciting Developments on the Horizon

After the success of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios announced a lot of bad news for fans. However, he has already planned the sequel with new games.

A few days ago, Larian Studios announced some very sad news for fans of Baldur's Gate 3 at the Game Developers Choice Awards. Despite a resounding success, several records broken during its release and above all several awards including the GOTY (game of the 'year), there will be no Baldur's Gate 4. There will also be no DLC as the community so hoped. Ultimately, if a sequel were to be produced, it would no longer be Larian's business, but that of another studio. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, since CEO Sven Vincke and his team still have many projects to implement. The end of Baldur's Gate 3 is only the beginning of a new adventure.

Fault of Baldur's Gate 4, two other games in preparation

The studio is not finished with video game development, on the contrary, they have dozens of ideas. “ We have two games we want to make and we have a lot of concepts, so let's just close out Baldur's Gate 3 » Vincke then teased in an interview with IGN. He did not give any more clues, but this still allowed the media to bounce back on the Divinity Original Sin license, also created by Larian. As a reminder, long before Baldur's Gate 3, it was with the Divinity games and more precisely the excellent Divinity Original Sin 2 that the studio became famous.

In the past, Vincke has explained several times that he has not yet resigned himself to abandoning the license, going so far as to speak of a “return to basics” for his team. “It's our own universe that we created,so we will come back to thatcertainly at some point“, he explained to IGN in July 2023.

Unfortunately, Vincke did not want to say more about these future projects and a potential sequel with Divinity Original Sin 3. “I can not tell you. I hope no one leaked it, but it's different from what you think, but it's still familiar enough that you recognize our signature“, he replied to IGN.

A return of Divinity Original Sin possible?

It is therefore impossible at the moment to know whether it will be a new license or not. After the success of Baldur's Gate 3, eyes will be on their next games. And given that there are at least two projects in the works, we can hope that one of them is Divinity. We also recall that a spin-off of Divinity Original Sin 2 was in the works before Larian obtained approval for BG3.

Divinity Fallen Heroes was to take place two years after the last game and offer gameplay that pushed the limits of its predecessor. Players would have found characters from DOS 2 there, like new faces whose destiny they could have influenced. Perhaps Larian will draw on concepts from this development game that has been put on hold indefinitely? One thing is certain, if there is Baldur's Gate 4, Hasbro will have to find another studio to take care of it.
