The rumor mill surrounding Nintendo’s Switch successor has been bubbling up in the last few weeks and months, but apparently the Japanese released the first information about the new console last year – in this case to Activision.
There are currently all sorts of new bits of information from the legal dispute between the FTC and Microsoft regarding the Activision-Blizzard takeover – this time including: interesting details about the Switch successor. In the last few weeks in particular, rumors about this have gained momentum and it seems to be only a matter of time before Nintendo officially announces the next console.
Activision, however, has apparently received information about the Switch 2 for much longer; this emerges from the documents submitted as part of the litigation. Internal communication within Activision can also be found there in the form of emails about the new console.
Accordingly, senior executives from Activision met with high-ranking Nintendo employees in December 2022 to discuss the Switch 2. In the emails, the platform is called “Switch NG” (Next Generation). There is also talk that the performance should be closer to the performance of PlayStation 4 or Xbox One – a circumstance that, according to recent rumors, has probably changed. It was recently reported that a demo based on Unreal Engine 5 with support for NVIDIA DLSS was shown at gamescom. In addition, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was also presented in 4K resolution, according to the rumor mill.
Even though a lot has happened regarding Switch 2 since the information injection to Activision in December 2022, the new report from Tom Warren from The Verge shows that Nintendo has been working on the Switch successor with publishers and developers behind closed doors for much longer. In the case of Activision, this is particularly interesting, as Nintendo has also been promised that Call of Duty will appear on the Switch or its console successor for the next ten years.
It remains to be seen when Nintendo will officially announce the Switch 2 and when it will be released. Rumor has it that it will happen in 2024. We will keep you up to date!
