This survey can be extended to my country's population of 1.329 billion, of which urban residents account for 57.2% and rural residents account for 42.8%. The survey mainly uses online and telephone surveys, supplemented by offline invitations and online responses. Samples were collected in 173 cities across the country, covering 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government.

A total of 1.58 million samples were collected in this survey. The official used SPSS sociological statistical software for analysis.   • In 2023, my country's adult national book reading rate is 59.8%, which is the same as 59.8% in 2022;

  • The newspaper reading rate was 23.1%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points from 23.5% in 2022;

  • The journal reading rate is 17.5%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points from 17.7% in 2022;

  • The exposure rate of digital reading methods (computer online reading, mobile phone reading, e-reader reading, Pad reading, etc.) is 80.3%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from 80.1% in 2022.

The official conducted a more in-depth analysis of the exposure to digital reading carriers in 2023:

  • 78.3% of adult citizens have read on mobile phones, an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 77.8% in 2022;

  • 70.6% of adult citizens read online through computers, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from 71.5% in 2022;

The survey mentioned that emerging digital reading methods such as listening to books and video narrations have developed. In 2023, 36.3% of adult citizens will read through listening to books; 4.4% of adult citizens will read through video narrations.

In addition, the per capita reading of paper books by adult citizens in my country will be 4.75 in 2023, down from 4.78 in 2022.

The average person reads paper books for 23.38 minutes a day, an increase of 0.25 minutes from 23.13 minutes in 2022.

In 2023, the per capita e-book reading volume of Chinese adults will be 3.40, which is higher than the 3.33 books in 2022. 12.3% of people read 10 or more paper books on average per year, and 9.9% read 10 or more e-books on average per year.
