The upcoming release of Ghost of Tsushima on May 16 on PC has raised questions about possible requirements similar to those of Helldivers 2 regarding the connection to the PSN. To address these concerns, the development studio behind Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch, recently clarified the situation. On X, the official account confirmed that players will not need to log in to PSN to enjoy Ghost of Tsushima's single player mode. However, access to the Legends multiplayer mode as well as the new PlayStation PC interface will require a PSN account.

Thank you for your opinion. Just so you know, a PSN account is required for online multiplayer and to use the PlayStation overlay. It is not required to play the single player game.

A new policy that is causing debate

The reaction of PC gamers to this new policy from Sony has been varied. Some already have a PSN account or have no reluctance to create one, while others express their dissatisfaction for various personal reasons. Gamers are concerned about sharing their personal data with a third-party company, while others doubt Sony's ability to keep PSN accounts secure, citing past hacking incidents. Additionally, the fact that the PlayStation Network is only available in 69 out of 195 countries raises questions about Sony's accessibility strategy.

This controversy also impacted Ghost of Tsushima pre-orders on PC. Although it will be possible to experience the single-player campaign without problem, the online mode will still require a PSN connection. Some users say they have decided to cancel their pre-orders to express their disagreement with Sony's policy of restricting access to certain features. For them, it should be possible to have access to all the content from the moment you buy the game (even more so when the price is high).

Democracy seems to be getting through this!

Helldivers 2 players finally won their case, because Sony recently announced that it was reversing its decision. It is now no longer mandatory for PC players to link a PSN account to Steam to enjoy the game. The move comes after a wave of discontent and massive refund requests, with Steam even removing the game in several countries. Sony took into account the concerns of gamers and decided to ease the restrictions initially imposed, which was favorably received by the gaming community.
