Epic Games has for “Fortnite” and the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) introduced an expansion of parental controls. The new time limit controls give parents the opportunity to determine when and how long their children can play.
The new tools are intended to make the gaming experience of young people easier to control and help prevent excessive gaming.
Time limits and in-game notifications
Epic has the new parental controls from “Fortnite” in one official blog post presented. Time limit controls allow parents to set either a daily time limit or specific time windows during which gaming is allowed.
There is also the option to allow children to request additional playing time quota after the time has expired. In this case, parents will be informed by email and can decide whether to allow additional time.
Once time limit control is enabled, kids will receive in-game notifications alerting them when only 30 minutes of play time remain. Once the time limit is reached, they can no longer use “Fortnite” or UEFN until the next time slot begins or their parents allow them more playing time.
The feature is cross-platform and applies to all devices on which “Fortnite” is used, as long as the same account is used.
Another tool that can be activated in the Epic account is the Time Report, which provides an accurate breakdown of daily play time.
In the time report dashboard, parents can see when their children played, for how long, and when they received additional time quota. These reports go back to the day the feature was enabled.
In addition to the time limit controls, Epic Games offers a number of other parental control options. These include voice and chat restrictions, the ability to filter offensive language, and options to limit purchases.
The popularity of “Fortnite” has already led to discussions about video game addiction among children in the past. The new functions give parents more control over their children's gaming behavior – if they are interested in it.
