In Electronic Arts' recent investor conference, CEO Andrew Wilson spoke about the future of “Apex Legends” and the strategic approach the company is taking to achieve a successful title.
While fans speculate about a possible “Apex Legends 2”, EA continues to support and further develop the original title.
Apex 2.0 and the curse of the second attempt
When it comes to “Apex Legends,” Wilson noted the importance of ongoing live service content that will keep the game attractive to the global community in the long term. He emphasized that “the level of innovation and creativity must grow with the community over time in order to sustain growth.”
At the same time, “Apex Legends” is currently “in an incredibly good position,” with a strong brand and a dedicated player base that supports EA and developers Respawn would like to further promote.
To the questionWhen asked whether EA and Respawn were considering an “Apex 2.0” or even a complete reboot, Wilson reacted skeptically. He referred to market observations and emphasized that a second attempt at a game “was almost never as successful as version 1.”
According to Wilson, EA intends to focus on the continuous development and improvement of “Apex Legends” in order to retain the existing community in the long term and protect their investments in the current system.
“The goal is to ensure we continue to support our global player base and provide them with new, innovative, creative content season after season,” Wilson explained. A separation of the community through a new title or the abandonment of previous game progress is “never a good situation”.
According to Wilson, the developers are continually working to develop additional game modes beyond the current gameplay. A completely new “Apex Legends 2” does not seem to be on the agenda – at least for now.
Further reports on the topic:
The approach of promoting “Apex Legends” as an original game rather than developing a sequel is ultimately reminiscent of the experiences with other major titles. In the case of “Overwatch”, Activision Blizzard decided to do so Release of a successorwhich, however, did not bring the desired success. The shooter is rated “mostly negatively” on Steam.
