House of the Dragon restored faith in a franchise that was initially planned for multiple spin-offs. Fortunately, some of them are at different stages of development, while others have been shelved or abandoned altogether. In an interview given to Reverseone of the screenwriters of Ten Thousand Ships reveals more details about a prequel project, which is heavily inspired by cinema. This will take care of fleshing out the character of Jon Snow, played by Kit Harrington from the saga Game Of Thrones !

Some difficulties

It's Brian Helgeland who informs us about HBO's decisions. The platform felt that their proposal for the series was too far from Game of Thrones. He said he thought he was not in the right time frame in relation to the universe of the original series. Development of the prequel began in March 2022, and George RR Martin confirmed that drafts of the script were already completed. Helgeland confirmed that the project was on hold for an indefinite period, but he hopes it will be revived thanks to the success of House of the Dragon. He stated :

That's why it hasn't been taken back yet, but nothing has ever died. I presented the idea to George RR Martin, who approved it. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to work more closely with him, but I would have loved to if the series had been picked up.

A hell of a sequel

Helgeland explained that his storyline was based on a mention of Queen Nymeria in a Westeros encyclopedia. According to this idea, the plot is comparable to the epic of Moses' exodus from Egypt and his journey to the promised land, which they were only able to achieve after many trials. He confirmed :

Basically, it was the story of Moses, but with Nymeria in his place. His kingdom is devastated and his people are forced to live on the water, hence the show's title, Ten Thousand Boats. They end up having to leave in search of a new home, like the Israelites leaving Egypt.

"Nothing ever died" He is convinced that this Game of Thrones spin-off buried by HBO will come out one day!

Such a scenario promises to be very interesting for fans of the series. Now we just have to wait for news from HBO.
