It is official: The Witcher is getting a fifth season, but it will also mark the end of the Netflix series. The streaming service confirmed this in a press release.

Liam Hemsworth's career as a witcher is therefore relatively short-lived: After Henry Cavill said goodbye to the role of Geralt of Rivia after three seasons, Hemsworth was hired as the titular Witcher.

After season 5, The Witcher will be over

It is not surprising that there will be a fifth season. Netflix had already confirmed the extension with the casting of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. What's new now is that Season 5 will also be the finale of The Witcher.

The decision makes perfect sense in view of the template: Seasons 4 and 5 are dedicated to the three remaining witcher novels by author Andrzej Sapkowski: Baptism of Fire, The Swallow Tower and The Lady of the Lake. After that, the video games from CD Projekt Red theoretically continue the story of Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and Triss.

It is currently unknown when season 4 of The Witcher will start on Netflix. Netflix has at least already announced that the fourth season will start filming on April 18, 2024. The release of the new episodes could be expected from mid-2025.

What else is happening with The Witcher right now

It currently remains to be seen how popular Liam Hemsworth will be as the new Witcher. Many fans didn't cope too well with Henry Cavill's exit and Geralt's replacement. Her dissatisfaction arose, for example, in the course of one petition with over 340,000 signatures.

In general, Netflix's Witcher franchise is on rather shaky ground. During Season 3, for example Rotten Tomatoes comes to an average rating of 79 percent, the meager audience score at 19 percent tells a different story. For the prequel Blood Origin Things actually look much worse with 28 and 13 points respectively.

Meanwhile, the animated film The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is scheduled to follow in 2024 with video game spokesman Doug Cockle as Geralt, and there are also numerous rumors about a spin-off about Ciri's gang of rats that has not yet been confirmed.
