Nagging to install unwanted apps

Motorola’s Edge series consists of mobiles with a design focus, with a curved screen and colors that stand out, and performance from mid-price to just below the top model. The Fusion models tend to be the cheapest in the family, and often the most affordable.

We are used to a given mobile phone being sold in different configurations, with varying amounts of storage space and perhaps also working memory. The Motorola Edge 70 Fusion is sold in Sweden in two configurations, but both have 8 gigabytes of working memory and 256 gigabytes of storage. Instead, it’s the size of the battery that makes the difference.

Best with the most battery

The variant with a 5200 mAh battery costs SEK 200 less, is 7.21 mm thick instead of 7.99 mm, and weighs 177 grams. This compared to the variant with an extra large 7000 mAh battery for SEK 5000, which is the one we tested.

Of course, it would be nice if the phone was a little lighter and thinner, but the fantastic battery life combined with a relatively flexible format is probably what I appreciate most about the Edge 70 Fusion.

The Motorola Edge 70 Fusion places itself in the top group in our battery test where we measure the screen time at maximum brightness. The phone is not unique with its large battery, but rather part of a trend where you use the new battery technology with silicon inclusion that gives higher capacity. At the same time, the battery test doesn’t say everything, Motorola is really good at keeping the phone’s power consumption down, and for example the app Merlin I use to identify birdsong doesn’t draw nearly as much battery here as in Samsung mobiles. The result is a mobile phone that lasts a really long time on a single charge.

Stylish design

I call the phone relatively flexible, but it is not small like the Samsung Galaxy S26. The screen is 6.78 inches, but the edges are thin and the curved format makes the phone comfortable to hold in the hand. But the screen is long and narrow and it is difficult to reach the upper parts with one hand.

Design has become something of Motorola’s signature in recent years. The screen is rounded on all four sides and slightly curved on the long sides, but not so that it significantly affects use. The back comes in different distinctive colors developed together with Pantone, and instead of a glass back, Motorola uses other materials, mainly plastic, with different textures and surface finishes that add to the character. My copy has a bluish-purple color with a grooved hard plastic back. Not quite as grippy as when Motorola uses plastic with a rubber surface, but it provides a better grip than slippery glass backs.

Motorola Edge 70 Fusion is waterproof, and not only according to IP68 but also IP69. This means that both in theory and in practice it can withstand being under water. It is also certified to withstand falls from a height of 1.2 meters and has received the highest grade when the EU has tested the shock resistance. For added protection, a clear hard plastic case is included in the box, but the phone loses much of its elegance and grip with it on.

Screen and performance

The screen is Oled type and is sharp, with fast refresh and high maximum brightness. In terms of performance, you notice more that it is a mid-range phone. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset wasn’t the fastest when it was new, and now it’s 1.5 years old. The performance is comparable to Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy A37, and here again I think you can tell that Motorola is trimming down the background activities on the phone, so for the most part it doesn’t feel slow. It’s mostly when loading large amounts of data, like when the phone restarts after a system update or I start a heavy game that I notice it takes a bit longer, otherwise it feels so fast that I don’t think about it being a cheaper model.

On paper, the camera setup has the same specifications as Samsung’s mid-range models Galaxy A37 and A57, in practice it can also compete with the Galaxy S26 and S26 Plus. The images get clear colors, sometimes a little excessively clear but rarely so that they become oversaturated, the camera copes well with handling difficult contrast conditions without the image being over- or under-exposed, and the main camera can also take images with two times zoom that have good sharpness. It is only in the dark that I notice that the camera does not keep up as well as the top models.

Motorola runs a clean version of Android with few additions to the user interface. It has a collection of AI tools for image processing and text assistance. The phone is largely clean of third-party apps, but Motorola does its best to change that with nagging notifications to install select apps for you.

My overall impression of the Motorola Edge 70 Fusion is an affordable mobile with fantastic battery life where you don’t notice much of the limitations that the price tag places on the screen, performance and camera. Motorola has succeeded with the Fusion model again this year.

Questions and answers

Does it take a long time to charge the large battery? It doesn’t come with a charger, but if you buy for Motorola’s 68-watt charger, it’s still quite fast.

How is the fingerprint reader? It sits in the screen and, at least during the test period, has a fast response.

How is the speaker sound? The stereo speakers have rich and full sound, Motorola is good at that.

An alternative

If it’s the mid-range price with maximum battery life you want, the Xiaomi Poco X8 Pro Max has even better battery life, but is a bit clumsier.

Camera example

The camera is mostly able to balance light and colors well.
