Mortal Kombat: Well-known YouTuber receives cease and desist letter from Warner

The well-known YouTuber ToastedShoes has apparently come under fire from Warner Bros. The channel, which primarily shows videos of modded games, has to take down its Mortal Kombat clips.

No good news for ToastedShoesThe channel has built up a strong reputation over the years with sometimes absurdly funny videos of modded games and now has over 800,000 subscribers. Videos about Mortal Kombat, in which, for example, non-game characters from other universes such as Disney have been modded in, will probably no longer be shown there in the foreseeable future.

As the YouTuber reports via X, he has received a cease and desist letter from Warner Bros. prohibiting him from publishing any more videos about Mortal Kombat. “This morning I received an IP infringement notice directly from Warner Brothers claiming that the Mortal Kombat mods in my content infringe their intellectual property rights,” the channel said on X/Twitter.

The channel was asked to delete all Mortal Kombat 1 videos, otherwise the operator would be reported for copyright infringement and the channel would be deleted completely.

ToastedShoes is not particularly happy about this, especially since Warner Bros. has had no problems with the channel so far and even Ed Boon himself apparently enjoyed the videos: “For more than 6 months, Warner Brothers has had no problems with people modding the game and (Ed Boon) himself has shared countless mod videos and clips praising them. The clips of my mods have over 1 billion views on all platforms, which have allowed me to raise awareness of the game and continue to support the development team I work with.”

A statement from Warner Bros. on the subject is still pending, but perhaps Ed Boon will pluck up the courage and persuade the publisher to be more lenient. It is not particularly common for publishers to take massive action against such content, but it is not unusual either. Nintendo in particular is known for repeatedly taking action against alleged copyright infringements. Warner does not yet seem to have similar videos to Hogwarts Legacy in its sights:
