Microsoft once wanted the studio, but was turned down

In the early stages of Media Molecule, Microsoft is said to have put out feelers for the “LittleBigPlanet” brand. The software company allegedly “somehow tried to steal Sony's studio.”

One of the co-founders Mark Healey revealed that Microsoft was interested in Media Molecule a long time ago. At that time, “LittleBigPlanet” was in development in the development studio.

First, Healey explains, “The funny thing is that we didn't actually have anything in writing that said we were continuing with Sony or that they even owned what we were doing, if I remember correctly.”

From a technical point of view, a cooperation with Microsoft would have been possible without any problems. But the founders ultimately didn't want that.

“We could have said, 'Yeah, screw it, let's work with Microsoft. They'll probably give us a bunch of money'” says the co-founder.

So those responsible at Media Molecule met with a Microsoft representative and had a little drink together. It wasn't until they took the guy to the hotel that he remembered his real concern.

He was almost embarrassed

“And he just said, 'Oh, by the way, guys, you know that we would be happy to take you on if you want to join us' or something like that. You could tell he was almost embarrassed to say that because it would have been a very naughty thing to do. And of course we didn't because we're nice people and we were very grateful that Sony gave us that chance,” explains Mark Healey.

Would Media Molecule have responded if Microsoft's representatives had presented themselves better – and above all soberly? Healey says no.

“That would never have happened. We had already built a good relationship with Sony, so it was basically a done deal,” he replied.

In 2008, LittleBigPlanet was released exclusively for PS3. In March 2010 it was taken over by Sony Computer Entertainment (now Sony Interactive Entertainment). Since then, the creative developer has been part of PlayStation Studios, but has recently stumbled tremendously. At the end of last year, 15 percent of the workforce had to be here dismissed become. It was later said that the studio narrowly escaped closure.

Incidentally, Mark Healey no longer works at Media Molecule. In April 2023 left he left the studio and announced that he wanted to take on a new challenge. Shortly before, it was announced that the live service support from “Dreams” to set, which also happened in September. Supposedly it was from the sandbox game a polished version planned, but Sony is said to have pulled the plug shortly before completion.
