In February 2023, Microsoft integrated the split screen into the Edge browser. A great feature for displaying two web pages side by side. Now the team has integrated a new feature that allows you to open a link directly in the split window by holding down the mouse.
Opera did it with version 113 and integrated this function straight away. And I have to say, it is very useful for comparing websites, for example.
If you drag a link while holding down the mouse, you were previously only offered the option of opening it in a new tab. In Edge Canary 128.0.2716.0, a command has now been added that allows you to drag the link to the left or right. The split screen function then opens and you can “drop” the link there and you will automatically have the split window. If you drop the link in the middle, a new tab will open as usual. Here is a small animation.
If you don't have it yet, create a shortcut to Microsoft Edge Canary
- Right click -> Properties and under “Target:” add msedge.exe” and a space
--enable-features=msEdgeSuperDragDropToSplitWindow
a. - Save and then open Edge using this shortcut.
The final version of the Edge 128 is planned for the end of August. Let's see if the function makes it by then.
