Max Payne 1 & 2 Remakes: No half measures

Remedy also lost a few words in the current annual report about the remakes of “Max Payne 1 & 2” announced in 2022. These revolved around the development status and budget of the new editions.

As is well known, the Finnish studio Remedy is currently working on several new projects. These include the remakes of the two action titles “Max Payne” and “Max Payne 2” announced in 2022.

In the course of the current business figures, those responsible at Remedy briefly discussed their current projects and also spoke about the two “Max Payne” remakes. As the studio promised, we can look forward to big projects in the new editions that are in no way inferior to “Alan Wake 2” in terms of effort.

“The Max Payne 1 & 2 remake will be a big new game with great potential, made possible by a similar development budget to Alan Wake 2,” said Remedy.

According to unconfirmed reports, the horror adventure's budget was 70 million euros, of which around 50 million euros went to development and 20 million euros to marketing.

Developers have recently made significant progress

Unfortunately, Remedy did not reveal when we can expect the official unveiling of the new editions or tangible details. However, the studio pointed out in the financial report that the development of the “Max Payne 1 & 2” remakes had recently made great progress.

“The Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes are also still in production. The team has made significant progress over the year,” said Remedy.

“We expect Condor, Control 2 and Max Payne 1 & 2 remake projects to move to the next stages of development in the first half of 2024.”

“With the refined multi-project model, the increased focus on Remedy's core strengths and the commitment of nearly 400 Remedians, we are excited about the great range of upcoming game releases,” the studio continued.

Remakes based on the Northlight Engine

The remakes of “Max Payne” (2001) and “Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne” (2003) are released in the form of a bundle that contains both remakes. When developing the remakes, the developers at Remedy use the Northlight Engine.

This has been used in the past in projects such as “Quantum Break”, “Control” and of course the survival horror title “Alan Wake 2” released last year.

According to the official announcement from 2022, Rockstar Games will finance the remakes. “The game's development budget, which will be the size of a typical Remedy AAA game production, will be funded by Rockstar Games,” according to the announcement at the time.

“Under the agreement, Remedy will have a royalty opportunity after Rockstar Games recovers its development, marketing and other costs for distributing and publishing the game.”

The remakes of “Max Payne 1 & 2” are coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
