The situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, preparations for next year’s NATO summit, relations between the alliance and the European Union were the topics of talks during the meeting of the defense ministers of the Bucharest Nine countries, informed the head of the Ministry of National Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak.
“I presented information on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. I spoke about a hybrid attack. We talked about how these situations that threaten our security can be solved” – reported the head of the Ministry of National Defense on Thursday talks of the Bucharest Nine, which are made up of Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania and Hungary.

On the same day, President Andrzej Duda met in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid a visit to Berlin, where he held talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Olaf Scholz, who is to assume the position of head of the new government.
– We had the opportunity to talk about the threats that affect the entire eastern flank of NATO. We also talked about the situation around the border of all countries that make up NATO’s eastern flank. We also said that the best formula is deterrence, I presented the information that the Polish government intends to increase defense spending, said the head of the Ministry of National Defense, referring to the announcement of increasing the size of the Polish army and the planned purchases of weapons.
Talks on NATO-EU relations in Bucharest
As he said, NATO-EU relations were also discussed. – We agreed that these relations should be consistent, that competition should not be allowed, synergy should be sought – emphasized the minister. As an example, he mentioned the military mobility project undertaken under the permanent military cooperation mechanism within the EU (PESCO).
He emphasized the proximity of the positions of the Bucharest Nine countries – NATO countries located on the eastern outskirts of the alliance between the Baltic and the Black Sea. – We are among friends, we can count on each other – said Blaszczak.
– I also presented Polish comments on the new strategic concept of the Alliance. North Atlantic, we have exchanged comments and assessments, we have an appointment to consult our positions, said the head of the Ministry of National Defense, referring to the NATO summit in Madrid planned for 2022.
