I confess that over the past few years, Apple has taught me that its technology “just works.” Long gone are the days when, with the help of jailbreak tweaks and some kind of mother, iPhone users from all over the world finished iOS on their own. But the other day, my favorite devices still pissed me off and the reason for this is the Modem mode.
💚 BY TOPIC: How to select or move items on Mac without pressing the trackpad. Try it, it’s very convenient.
Brief introduction. Due to family circumstances, a couple of times a week I have to work in the lobby of the administrative building. Unfortunately, there is no Wi-Fi access at this location, but I effortlessly connect to my iPhone’s Hotspot Mode and surf the Internet. That was until I decided to upgrade my MacBook Pro (2013) to MacBook Air (2022).
And so, having once again arrived at the remote location, I, as usual, easily connected to the access point from the iPhone to the brand new MacBook and tried to open yablyk.com. To my surprise, the site did not open. My attempts to go to other Internet resources were also unsuccessful. The Internet on the MacBook Air did not appear.
Moreover, in the status bar of the iPhone and in the menu bar of macOS, “chain links” flaunted, symbolizing the successful operation of the Modem Mode.
Having tried 100,500 ways to solve problems with the Modem Mode that I know, in the 1.5 hours that I spent at “work”, I managed to connect to the Internet. Very angry and frustrated, I headed home to quickly deal with this problem. I was very curious if Personal Hotspot would work with my old MacBook Pro (2013) and home Mac mini (2020).
To my surprise, at home, the iPhone instantly distributed the Internet to the MacBook Pro (2013). In the case of the Mac mini (2020), the same problem occurred as with the MacBook Air. There is a connection, the Internet is not.
Unfortunately, the search for a solution to this problem on the Internet did not help me, apparently the problem is not very popular. On the Apple support websites and forums, it all boils down to common methods for solving Hotspot problems: reboot devices, check APN and password details, reset settings, etc. Nothing helped in my case.
Almost resigned to the fact that I was dealing with a temporarily unsolvable “cant” from Apple developers, I decided to make a “call to a friend” who understood all sorts of “routers, ports, proxies and Internet protocols. And about a miracle! Once again, the proverb “do not have a hundred rubles, but have a hundred friends” proves its relevance. Below I publish a suggested method that helped me restore the modem mode to all my computers.
