Like the LEGO games, but with bigger heads!

Do you know the Funko Pop! figures that have sparked the collecting passion of many film, series and game fans in their square boxes in recent years? With “Funko Fusion” the cute figures are now getting their first own video game and we were recently able to play it.

We all know the various “LEGO” games that make the hearts of co-op lovers beat faster with their charming humor. Solving small puzzles together and exploring the world created from individual parts is ideal for a relaxing afternoon on the couch.

The one shown at Gamescom 2024 “Funko Fusion” follows a similar line. However, the focus here is not on Lego bricks, but on the eponymous Funko Pop! figures. In real life, they are popular collectible figures, in video games they are the reason for combining different universes in one game.

These include Characters and worlds from “Five Nights at Freddy's”“Battlestar Galactica” and “Shaun of the Dead”. Popular video game heroes like Mega Man also find their way into the game. So there should be something for everyone here.

With more than 60 different characters, everyone will find the right character for themselves. The individual characters not only have the look of their role model, but also specific skills and weapons.

Perfect for a family afternoon!

“Funko Fusion” is a third-person action adventure that combines more than 22 different franchises in one game, which ensures plenty of variety. Some of the integrated franchises will be familiar to younger people, while some of the heroes will evoke nostalgia in us older people.

The different worlds must first be played with the corresponding characters in order to experience the story. For example, in the “The Umbrella Academy” level you take on the role of Allison and use her unique abilities to progress.

The mummy is also there.

Whenever you see a “Funko Pop!” box in the world, you can switch roles and choose a different character. Series fans will recognize most of the settings and storylines, as “Funko Fusion” stays close to many popular scenes while giving everything a certain “Funko” touch.

So you don't play your favorite scenes from “Back to the Future” exactly, but have missions that are very close to them. Once you've completed the level, you can also return with characters from other universes. Thanks to character-specific skills, this opens new doors and treasures every now and then. This freedom of play should help you to visit the individual locations again and again and unlock more secrets thanks to new characters.

During our short play session of “Funko Fusion” we decided to hunt small dinosaurs in a “Jurassic Park” inspired level. Using cool weapons we searched for and hit the prehistoric animals before they fell asleep.

News about Funko Fusions:

In “Funko Fusion” we don’t kill, which is ideal for an afternoon of gaming with the whole family. There are a few corners that we haven’t been able to fully explore yet, and we could have come back with another character from another franchise and uncovered the corresponding secrets.

It will probably take you a while to discover everything. If you just want to play through it, you don't have to come back.

Assessment: average

“Funko Fusion” can be played alone in single player mode, but you can also team up online in a team of four and experience the adventures in the individual levels with the big-headed characters. It is not yet possible to say how beginner-friendly the whole thing is: we were simply given the controller and started running.

But there were no major stumbling blocks for our demo: opening chests, running, dodging and shooting were enough to complete the level. Everything feels a bit like the LEGO games and was certainly inspired by them now and again.

The specific characteristics of the characters, which were taken from the individual series and films, give “Funko Fusion” an interesting twist. Especially if you know the franchises! Many of them are classics that may not mean anything to the youngest. It is difficult to say whether the charm will really rub off on them.

The gameplay seems to be quite motivating, but we are not sure at this point whether it will appeal to non-fans. For example, if you don't like dinosaur movies, Amazons or killer dolls, will you enjoy playing the levels? The answer is simple: maybe. For that to happen, the gameplay of the individual levels has to be understandable without any background knowledge, which we are still somewhat doubtful about at the moment.
