LibreELEC 12.0 Distribution Kit Released for Home Theater Creation

Presented project release LibreELEC 12.0developing a fork of the distribution for creating home theaters OpenELEC. The user interface is based on the Kodi media center. For loading prepared images for working from a USB drive or SD card (32- and 64-bit x86, Raspberry Pi 2/3/4/5, various devices on Rockchip, Allwinner, NXP and Amlogic chips). Size assemblies for x86_64 architecture – 247 MB.

With LibreELEC, you can turn any computer into a media center, which is no more difficult to operate than a DVD player or set-top box. The basic principle of the distribution is “everything just works”; to get a completely ready-to-use environment, you just need to load LibreELEC from a Flash drive. The user does not need to worry about keeping the system up to date – the distribution uses a system for automatically downloading and installing updates, activated when connected to the global network. It is possible to expand the functionality of the distribution through a system of add-ons that are installed from a separate repository developed by the project developers.

The distribution does not use the package base of other distributions and is based on own developments. In addition to the standard Kodi capabilities, the distribution provides a number of additional functions aimed at maximizing the simplification of work. For example, a special configuration add-on is being developed that allows you to configure network connection parameters, manage LCD screen settings, and allow or disable automatic installation of updates. Also provided are such features as using a remote control (control is possible both via infrared and via Bluetooth), organizing file sharing (Samba server is built-in), built-in BitTorrent client Transmission, automatic search and connection of local and external drives.

In the new release:

  • The included Kodi media center has been updated to version 21.0.
  • Stabilized support for Raspberry Pi 5 boards and improved performance on Raspberry Pi 4 boards. Added 64-bit builds for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5.
  • Updated package versions, for example, mesa 24.0.6, Python 3.11.9, samba 4.20.0, pipewire 1.0.4, systemd 255, Linux kernel 6.6.
  • For the x86_64 architecture, in addition to the main assembly with the new GBM (Generic Buffer Management) and V4L2 graphics stack, the same as in assemblies for ARM boards and supporting HDR on systems with new AMD and Intel GPUs, a separate Generic-legacy assembly has been added for old equipment with NVIDIA video cards, which use the old X11-based graphics stack used in the LibreELEC 7-10 branches.
  • Support for devices based on Amlogic S905, S905X/D and S912 chips has been restored, for which support for accelerated video playback in H264 and HEVC formats is provided, and HDR support for HEVC and VP9 has been added.
