KDE Project Unveils KDE Gear 24.05 Suite of Applications

Most notable changes:

  • The composition includes 5 new applications:
    • Audex – a program for copying tracks from audio CDs.

    • Accessibility Inspector – an interface for identifying problems in applications with support for people with disabilities.

    • Francis – a program for developing time management skills pomodoro methodwhich allows you to achieve increased productivity by alternating phases of concentrated work (25 minutes) and rest (5 minutes).

    • Kalm – a simulator for various breathing techniques.

    • Skladnik – puzzle game version Sokoban.

  • The Dolphin file manager provides additional information when navigating through special folders, for example, when going to a folder with recently used files, the file modification time is shown by default, and when going to a folder with a recycle bin, the file deletion time is shown. Implemented automatic saving of open windows and tabs, the state of which is now restored in the event of an emergency shutdown or system restart. Added the ability to control the display of recycle bin and backup files along with hidden files. Implemented support for detaching the contents of a split view into a separate window.

    During the search process, details specific to the content found are shown, for example, resolution and creation time are shown for images, and information about the author, album and duration is shown for audio files. Added support for displaying thumbnails for catalogs hosted on remote storages. Animation has been implemented to accompany the actions being performed (for example, animation of a folder icon when a file is moved to it, or animation of the appearance and disappearance of panels).

  • The capabilities of the Itinerary travel assistant have been expanded. Added information about services on trains and buses, such as the availability of Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Work has begun on a joint project Transitous, which provides a vendor-independent public transport route mapping service. The capabilities of the system for extracting travel documents from email and chats have been expanded.
  • In the messaging program Neochat, which uses the Matrix protocol, a separate pop-up window has been added to search for chats. The function of scanning PDF documents and other types of files sent to the chat for the presence of travel documents in them, and displaying information related to them has been implemented (scanning is performed on the local system without sending data to external servers).

  • Tokodon, an application with a client implementation for the decentralized microblogging platform Mastodon, provides the ability to use a separate window when writing a new message that does not block work with the application. A follow request counter has been added to the sidebar.

  • The Kdenlive video editor supports group effects that can be applied to multiple clips at once. Added a mechanism for automatic machine translation of subtitles running on the local system. The ability to record audio from a microphone or applications on the local system has been returned. The operation of moving clips with the Spacer tool has been accelerated. The ability to manage sets of resources, such as images, clips, titles and animations, has been redesigned.

  • The Elisa music player now has the ability to switch between displaying songs as a list and as a grid of icons.

  • The Okular document viewer has added support for displaying drop-down menus used in some types of PDF documents.
  • Spectacle screenshot software has been moved to use a generic tool tab style. Additional substitutions are provided for use in screenshot and screencast file names, such as epochal time substitution and/for 12-hour clock substitution. Added the function of scanning QR codes and opening links encoded in them.


  • In the KCalc calculator, next to the calculation result, the associated expression previously entered by the user is displayed.
  • The Discover application manager handles situations where an application in a Flatpak package is marked as no longer in existence and is replaced by another application. In such a situation, the user will be asked whether to leave the old application or switch to a new one.

  • In the Kate text editor, the logic for compiling a list of recently used files has been changed. To be included in the list, it is now necessary that a file write or close operation has been performed, which excludes files that are currently open and are still being worked on from appearing in the list.
  • The Ark archive program has added the ability to open and unzip self-extracting files supplied with the exe extension.

  • The Merkuro calendar scheduler (formerly Kalendar) has an updated date and time selection interface and improved performance.

  • The Akregator RSS reader offers a new layout of elements and added support for dark themes.
