A year later, Phil Spencer, director of Xbox, specified to the Financial Times Xbox's ambitions around mobile gaming with the launch of a game application store for iPhones and Android phones if its acquisition of Activision Blizzard was approved by regulatory authorities.

The opening of a mobile store is possible following new rules requiring Apple and Google to open their mobile platforms to application stores owned and managed by other companies under the European law called Digital Markets Act ( DMA).

“We want to be able to bring Xbox and content from our third-party partners to every screen where someone would want to play.

Today we can't do it on mobile devices, but we want to build a world that we believe will open up to these devices.

The Xbox store will be released in July

Last December, Phil Spencer recalled the importance of such a market for the Xbox business. Indeed, the number of mobile gamers in the world far exceeds the installed base of consoles. This is a unique opportunity.

This is an important part of our strategy and we are actively working on it today, not only on our own, but in discussions with other partners who would also like to have more choice in how they can monetize their content on the cellphone.

Responding to a series of questions at the Bloomberg Technology Summit, Xbox President Sarah Bond said the mobile store would be “accessible on all devices, in all countries, no matter what, regardless of closed ecosystem store policies.”

But this web store is only a first step for the brand which “aims to create a trusted app store, with roots in gaming”.

“We will start by bringing our own portfolio of games to [la boutique mobile Xbox]so you'll see games like Candy Crush or Minecraft appear in this experience.

We're going to start with the web, and we're doing it because it really allows us to have an accessible experience on all devices, in all countries, no matter what and regardless of the policies of closed ecosystem stores.

In all likelihood, it will therefore not just be a list of applications, but a place where you can find your games library, your identity, your achievements and overall your overall Xbox experience.
