Is the release of GTA 6 finally on the horizon? Do you really mean that?

Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of GTA 6, but in the meantime they are still relying on its predecessor. You would actually think that almost everyone now owns GTA 5, but the Rockstar hit is still a cash cow, as new figures show.

GTA 5: One of the most popular video games worldwide

Grand Theft Auto 5 has been on the market for more than 10 years, but is still selling extremely well – especially on consoles. During a quarterly earnings conference call between Rockstar's parent company Take-Two and investors, CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the game has now changed sold around 200 million times and that even though it was in both Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus. Since August 2023, GTA 5 has sold around 15 million times. In comparison: Hogwarts Legacy is one of the best-selling games of 2023 and has sold around 22 million copies so far (source: PCGamer).

With 200 million copies sold worldwide, GTA 5 has the second place among best-selling games of all time inside. Only Minecraft was able to beat the Rockstar hit with around 300 million copies sold on all platforms (source: VGC).

According to Zelnick, this success is due, among other things, to the thriving role-playing community and he doesn't seem to be wrong. According to the Statista site, GTA 5 was released in April 2024 more than 129 million hours watched on Twitch the absolute leader on Twitch. This is followed by League of Legends with around 95 hours (source: Statista).

GTA 6: Release date is now more precise

According to the numbers, Rockstar Games could actually take its time with GTA 6, but millions of fans are waiting for the successor and there is some good information here. As part of its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2024 results, Take-Two further clarified the release date for GTA 6. Instead of just 2025, the company is now confirming that Fall 2025 is the planned release date (Source: T2).
