What are the strengths and weaknesses of Dungeon Crawler Carl?
The novel revolves around the protagonist Carl and the cat Princess Donut, who suddenly… are thrown into an absurd adventure. The plot uses mechanics that many people know from role-playing and video games. This so-called LitRPG genre mixes classic fantasy with leveling up, loot and new abilities, giving the story a very fast-paced dynamic.
The story doesn’t mince words at all. The violence is deliberately excessive and the humor is sometimes quite crude, but it fits the crazy setting perfectly. There are references to well-known science fiction works and pop culture hidden everywhere, which make you smile while reading. The pace remains high without neglecting the characters.
We like this:
- + Funny and weird humor.
- + Clever video game elements incorporated.
This bothers us:
- – Only the English version is reduced in price.

Conclusion: Who is the fantasy bestseller worth for?
The book is a must for Fans of video games, pen & paper adventures and weird humor. Anyone who gets involved in the crazy premise with exaggerated action and an idiosyncratic cat will get excellent entertainment for little money.
On the other hand, if you only read deep, high literature without violence, you should probably stay away. However, for just under thirteen euros, the very well-rated start of the series is a great bargain for all lovers of exciting pop culture.
