ChatGPT can live on Mac
ChatGPT is a chatbot from OpenAI that has recently taken the world by storm, and there’s a new app that lets you access it on a Mac. Here’s how to get started.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November, built on the company’s GPT-3 machine learning models. Companies like Microsoft have integrated it, while others, including Google, are afraid of it.
It has various apps for answering questions and generating text, and there’s a new app that brings it to the Mac menu bar.
Created by Jordy Bruin, MacGPT is a macOS application available for free, although people can add their price to support the developer.
When a user logs in with their OpenAI credentials, they can click the menu bar icon to start a conversation. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to activate MacGPT without using a mouse or trackpad.
How to use ChatGPT on Mac with MacGPT
MacGPT is available to run on Monterey and Ventura versions for macOS.
Visit the Bruin web page on Gumroad. Enter 0 in the price field to download it for free, but we recommend throwing Bruin a few dollars. Click “I want it!” and the 3.1MB download will start immediately. Double-click the zip file in your Downloads folder, then drag the app to your Applications folder.
The “Internet” tab inside the application allows you to log in with your OpenAI credentials. Visit the OpenAI website to sign up for a free account. In the Native tab, it is possible to access ChatGPT using API credentials, which can be found in the user settings of your OpenAI account.
How to Use ChatGPT on Mac – Sample Questions and Tips
The MacGPT application notes that this provides faster response and a smoother interface. After logging into the application, hints are displayed directly from OpenAI.
These hints remind users that this is currently under investigation and that some of the information generated may be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.
ChatGPT offers various sample hints to get you started. For example, type in “Explain quantum computing in simple terms” or “Any creative ideas for a 10 year old’s birthday party?”
Once a question or statement has been answered, ChatGPT will generate a response. Depending on the query, some results may be longer than others. If it takes a while, there is a button to stop it from running.
It wasn’t that easy
There are buttons at the bottom of the answer to like or dislike the answer. OpenAI has added this option so that people can give feedback on ChatGPT answers in case it is “hallucinating”, meaning that it may give an answer that is false or not supported by its training data.
In addition, MacGPT and the ChatGPT website keep conversations in history so that users can return to them. ChatGPT can also be accessed through the OpenAI website and is functionally identical to MacGPT without unique features.
