How to catch Shiny Pokémon in the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Purple games

Find out how to increase your chances of encountering evasive Shiny Pokémon in the Paldea region, Septentria and under the Blueberry Institute Terra-Dome.

Have you ever encountered Pokémon whose colors were strangely different from those of their counterparts during your wanderings through Paldea, Septentria and the Blueberry Institute? These kinds of specimens are in fact chromatic Pokémon. Individuals similar to their peers in terms of their combat performance, but who are prized by many Trainers for their dazzling appearances! Chromatic Pokémon are extremely rare, but there are a few tips that can help you increase your chances of encountering them.

If you like Chromatic Pokémon, start by getting the Chroma Charm. This is a mysterious item that makes it easier to encounter wild Shiny Pokémon. You can obtain it by contacting Mr. Jacq at the Mesaledo Academy after having completely filled Paldea's Pokédex. You will also obtain various rewards, such as special Poké Balls or precious items, as you get closer to the formidable goal of capturing all 400 species of Pokémon in the region.

Taking part in Mass Spawns is one of the easiest ways to find Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet And Pokémon Purple. Several specimens of the same Pokémon species appear in the same place during these phenomena. The more you fight and catch, the greater your chances of encountering a chromatic individual. Three messages may appear depending on your progress:

  • The massive appearance (of this Pokémon) is reduced…
  • The massive appearance (of this Pokémon) shrinks further…
  • The massive appearance (of this Pokémon) dissipates !

You will have a better chance of encountering a Shiny Pokémon when the message “ The massive appearance (of this Pokémon) dissipates ! » is displayed. It is from this moment that it is recommended to avoid fighting and captures, and to keep your eyes peeled for the chromatic Pokémon you are tracking. The trick then is to enter a new area or start a picnic, then return to the location of the mass spawn. You will notice that a new group of individuals of the same species will be present, and that these new encounters do not make the mass appearance disappear.

Auto-battle is the easiest method to KO Mass Spawn Pokémon. Take a good look at the terrain you are on before selecting the Pokémon you plan to send into battle. If the mass spawn takes place on a body of water, it will be better to use a Pokémon that can swim or fly, for example. For massive land appearances, favor Pokémon that move quickly, like Gallame or Malvalame.

And even if you're not lucky during a massive appearance and you don't come across any chromatic Pokémon, you'll still have the opportunity to collect a whole bunch of Pokémon samples. These objects are very useful for making CTs, obtaining League Points (or PL), or for using the Object Printer of the Blueberry Institute League club. Keep in mind that you can only have 999 of each sample type at a time. New massive spawns start every day at 00:00 (Paldea, Septentria, and Blueberry Institute time), so check your map regularly to see if the Pokémon you want is present in any of them.

There is another method that allows you to increase your chances of encountering Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet And Pokémon Purpleno matter where you are. Consuming purchased dishes or preparing your own Sandwiches allows you to benefit from Taste Auras. One of them, the Brilliance Aura, increases your chances of encountering a chromatic Pokémon.

The best way to activate a Brilliance Aura is to make Sandwiches made from Secret Spice, a rare ingredient that you can obtain by completing 5 or 6 star Teracrystal raids (see our Teracrystal raid guide for more information). The type of Brilliance Aura you get depends on the Secret Spice and the ingredients used for the Sandwich. For example, combining a Salty Secret Spice, Sour Secret Spice, and Lettuce produces a Plant Shine Aura, which is ideal for tracking down chromatic Grass-type Pokémon.

You can mix various ingredients as you wish, but the majority of Sandwiches that grant Aura Brilliance require at least two Secret Spices. Most Sandwich ingredients are available for purchase at Horno Bakery, Yatou Supermarket and Hola Olla in Paldea; at the Delapêche Boutique in Septentria, and in the distributors at the Terra-Dôme Central Post.

Below you will find the list of Sandwich recipes which each grant you a level 3 Brilliance Aura of the type of your choice, as well as an Encounter Aura and an Insignia Aura, also of level 3.

  • Normal Shine Aura: Tofu, Salty Secret Spice, Sour Secret Spice
  • Fire Shine Aura: Red Pepper, Salty Secret Spice, Strong Secret Spice
  • Aura Brilliance Water: Cucumber, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice
  • Aura Shine Plant: Lettuce, Salty Secret Spice, Sour Secret Spice
  • Electric Shine Aura: Yellow Pepper, Salty Secret Spice, Strong Secret Spice
  • Ice Shine Aura: Craparoi stick, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice

  • Poison Brilliance Aura: Green Pepper, Salty Secret Spice, Strong Secret Spice
  • Aura Shine Sol: White Ham, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice
  • Aura Brilliance Vol: Raw Ham, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice
  • Psychic Brilliance Aura: Onion, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice
  • Aura Brilliance Insect: Cherry Tomato, 2 sprigs of Secret Salted Spice
  • Rock Shine Aura: Bacon, Salty Secret Spice, Sour Secret Spice
  • Aura Brilliance Spectrum: Red Onion, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice
  • Dragon Brilliance Aura: Avocado, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice
  • Aura Brilliance Darkness: Smoked Filet, Salty Secret Spice, Sweet Secret Spice
  • Steel Shine Aura: Ground Steak, Savory Secret Spice, Sweet Secret Spice
  • Fairy Shine Aura: Tomato, 2 sprigs of Secret Salty Spice

You can also go to the Blueberry Institute cafeteria and spend 150 Blueberry Points (PM) to buy the Blueberry Menu which activates the Brilliance Aura of all types. This aura is much less powerful than those of Sandwiches prepared at a picnic. Indeed, it is level 1 and not level 3, but it increases the chances of encountering chromatic Pokémon of 18 types at the same time, which makes it a perfect Taste Aura for your wanderings.

Now that you know how to track down the Shiny Pokémon of your dreams, all you have to do is be patient and explore the wilds of Paldea, Septentria, and the Blueberry Institute. Consider using Shine Auras in areas where the Pokémon you seek are usually present and training a Pokémon specifically for capture. By that, mean that it must be able to avoid KOing the Pokémon you are trying to catch. For example, a Hat with the Spore and Fake Chage abilities and the Technician hidden talent can easily help you capture a Shiny Pokémon safely.

Happy hunting, Trainers!
