How does Hideo Kojima work? Designer talks about development

As part of a presentation at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, Hideo Kojima spoke in detail about his new project “Death Stranding 2”. During the panel, Kojima shared with us, among other things, his everyday work.

After a five-year absence, Hideo Kojima returned to the Tokyo Game Show in 2024. As part of his appearance at Asia's most important gaming trade fair, the well-known designer took part in one 90 minute panel to “Death Stranding 2” part.

On the one hand, Kojima used his presence at TGS 2024 to present new features that the successor offers us. Including a photo mode that Kojima and his team use want to go new ways. For example, the photo mode should allow you to influence the story of “Death Stranding 2” with the snapshots you take.

Kojima also talked about working on “Death Stranding 2” and told players how his everyday life currently looks like. Since his new project is an open-world title, Kojima is currently spending a lot of time testing the game.

Below we have summarized his statements about the work on “Death Stranding 2” for you.

Kojima's statements on development summarized

  • The game is an open world title. So he spends a lot of time playtesting.
  • Kojima plays the title every day from morning to evening.
  • As Kojima plays, he adjusts the balance, adds details, makes corrections, and adjusts the music.
  • He says this is the most important part of game development and takes a lot of time.
  • Kojima works hard and adds that this is the most fun phase of game development.
  • It is the point at which everyone's individual work is combined into a project.
  • At this stage, some elements and the story will be changed slightly, and he may have to bring the speakers back to record more lines.
  • Less than half of the Japanese voice acting is finished.

It is still unclear when “Death Stranding 2” will be released. As Hideo Kojima revealed at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, the development of the successor is 30 to 40 percent completed. The team has already set a release date internally, but does not want to communicate it publicly yet.

A decision that Kojima attributes to the fact that during the development of a video game, unexpected problems can always arise, delaying its completion and therefore its release.

Therefore, Kojima can currently only confirm that we can expect the release of “Death Stranding 2” sometime in 2025.
