Helldivers II Will Have Less Frequent Updates, But Here’s Why That’s a Good Thing

An exhausting mega-hit

Who would've believed that : Helldivers II is officially the fastest-selling PlayStation game with 12 million sales in less than three months. With great gameplay, impressive action and, above all, a finely thought-out community principle that engages players over time, taking them towards unsuspected surprises, the title is a real hit. And it's deserved.

However, being successful is also sometimes a burden that you have to be able to carry on your shoulders. We remember, for example, the first complicated days – the servers simply broke down in the face of monstrous demand – but also a constant monitoring effort on the part of the developers.

Let's not forget that Arrowhead is an independent Swedish studio and although Sony is the publisher of the title, the company's workforce was around a hundred people in 2023. And to manage so many people, continue to develop the future of the title and publish very recurring updates, you have to be constantly present and rigorous… which quickly becomes exhausting.

Some changes for the future

Like an alarm bell to ring, Arrowhead Game Studios has given some news about it: first of all, a change of CEOjust that. Johan Pilestedt leaves his place to Shams Jorjani (formerly at Paradox Interactive), whom he personally hired a little earlier. Moreover, this appointment is entirely voluntary: Johan Pilestedt will now wear the hat of creative director. We would like him to have a good rest, if this position really has it.

Besides that, it's official: Helldivers II updates will be fewer and farther between. The reason ? Relieve the teams who have been working hard since the launch title fight in February. Then, this will also make it possible to better refine each of the updates, we are assured. Evil for good.

Finally, we will end with a bonus anecdote, namely the sales figures of the first Helldivers, now at four million. An excellent score for an independent game which laid the foundations for a sequel, albeit with a much lower budget.
