Helldivers 2: The PlayStation game with the largest launch on Steam

Available since February 8 on PlayStation 5 and PC, Helldiverse 2 attracts a lot of people. It even became the best launch of a Sony game on Steam, beating a certain God of War. By playing it, we understand why.

155,926: this is the number of people who connected at the same time to Helldiverse 2 on Steam, Sunday February 11, according to SteamDB. This is a record for a game published by PlayStation, previously held by God of War (73,529 people in 2022). It's therefore a great start for this sequel, also available on PlayStation 5, since February 8. And this little success does not come out of nowhere.

Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, Helldiverse 2 is a third-person shooter (TPS) game that emphasizes one unstoppable argument: cooperation. If you can play it alone, the interest is above all to get together with your friends to take part in frenetic and difficult missions, where communication is essential to get through it. Spectacular and addictive, Helldiverse 2 is also based on a second degree which recalls Starship Troopersthe cult film by Paul Verhoeven.

Helldiverse 2 relies on a tasty formula to convince

In Helldiverse 2we fight against two factions: giant aliens that look like large insects (another reminder for Starship Troopers) or robots that are reminiscent of Terminators (another nod to SF). At first glance, the experience seems simplistic and Helldiverse 2 would then be just a simple TPS like we have seen so many others. It nevertheless manages to stand out with some good, well-integrated ideas. And a requirement that imposes certain precautions.

As Helldiverse 2 is focused on cooperation (alone, it's less fun), you have to be careful with everything you do. Thus, we can lose a bullet to an ally if we aim poorly, knowing that the gameplay is intended to be realistic: we tremble when we move while the reloading of weapons is only manual. Arrowhead Game Studios also provides us with stratagems, aid sent by our ship. There are many: supply crates, arsenal pieces, orbital strikes, turrets… But again, be careful: your support can crash into a teammate if you communicate poorly.

Helldiverse 2 is therefore a game where you must constantly watch out for others and yourself, while avoiding being overwhelmed by a horde of enemies. It is necessary to think, but also to act quickly (missions must be completed within a given time, with the obligation to leave the area) and to (really) collaborate in certain tasks.

The result is moments of high tension, where we wonder if we will be able to get through it without incident. There are also hilarious sequences, when we misjudge the point of impact of a stratagem or trigger systemic phenomena. This is why people love Helldiverse 2despite some technical inconveniences (we have deplored several connection drops to the servers since the release).
