Helldiverse 2 it's THE surprise at the start of 2024. A commercial success for developers Arrowhead Studios and PlayStation, the title sold 12 million copies in just twelve weeks. A record for a Sony game that was released on both PS5 and PC. However, all is not rosy. The Japanese company recently announced (before reversing its decision) that a PSN account would soon be mandatory to play the title on Steam, causing massive review-bombing on the Valve platform and causing the number of connected players to drop at the same time. time. Why such discontent? Sylvain and Nagla return to the subject.
Between safety and playing comfort
According to Sony, connecting to PSN for Helldivers 2 on PC would provide better data protection for users. An argument that may seem obsolete, due to the PSN hacking dating from 2016. This attack aimed to harvest user information and disrupt Sony's online services. It would be to avoid this type of case that the Japanese firm wishes to impose its double authentication on Steam.
Obviously, Sony did a bad job of imposing its PSN connection on Steam. Making this mandatory was frowned upon by players and many believe it would have been wise to make it optional. Offering an in-game cosmetic could have influenced some users to link their account, something the Japanese giant did not do.
Sony in trouble
Pointed out by players, Sony is seen as the big bad wolf in this matter. PlayStation services are not present in several countries (177 to be exact). It would be several thousand, even millions of players who would then be unable to play Helldivers 2. However, Sony had announced that it was ready to reimburse players affected by this obligation. Steam had taken the lead by deciding to remove the game from sale in certain countries and to prevent players from purchasing the title without being able to play it.
Players are tired of having to create accounts or install specific launchers to play. By requiring the creation of a PSN account for Helldivers 2, Sony is alienating Steam users. Other reasons may (or may not) explain Sony's need to mandate such a thing. To find out more, watch our JV Debate to better understand these decisions.
