When a single software project consumes more money than the entire national budget of some countries, everything is at stake for the gaming world. Take-Two is taking full risks with GTA 6 and is pumping billions into development. But what if the mega-blockbuster stumbles in the end? The gaming industry is holding its breath because the unimaginable amounts of money behind the scenes could have drastic consequences for us players.

The most expensive entertainment product of all time?

How much does GTA 6 really cost to produce? Neither developer Rockstar Games nor publisher Take‑Two Interactive have yet confirmed specific amounts. However, in several interviews, Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick was clear and simply described the development of GTA 6 as “expensive”.

Loud Business Insider Industry analysts assume that the costs are now increasing 1 to 1.5 billion US dollars could amount to. If this estimate is confirmed, GTA 6 would not only be the most expensive video game of all time, but the most expensive entertainment product ever produced.

Zelnick explained that Take-Two relies on the best creative teams in the industry and deliberately gives them a lot of freedom:

Quote:
“We try to give our teams virtually unlimited financial, creative and human resources – with the goal of delivering perfection.”

Cost development: Why everything is becoming more and more expensive

The costs are also so high because modern AAA games are becoming increasingly complex. Zelnick emphasized several times that development costs throughout the industry have been rising steadily for years. Anyone who pursues the goal of providing the “best entertainment in the world” must expect extreme expenses.

Although artificial intelligence could make processes more efficient in the long term, Take‑Two currently has no falling development costs yet observed. On the contrary: high-quality open-world games like GTA 6 are consuming more and more resources – from technology to personnel to global studios.

Take‑Two consciously aims to produce blockbuster games, even if that means higher risks and higher production costs. According to Zelnick, this is a “high-stakes game” that not every publisher can play – but Take-Two can.

Comparison: GTA 6 explodes all dimensions

To better understand how expensive GTA 6 really is, it’s worth taking a look at other AAA productions:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War: approx. 700 million dollars (viewed over the entire life cycle)
  • Star Citizen: approx. 670 million dollars (still in development)
  • Cyberpunk 2077: approximately $440 million
  • GTA 5: approximately $246 million
  • The Last of Us Part II: approximately $220 million
  • Horizon Forbidden West: approximately $212 million

Even these enormous budgets are clearly exceeded by GTA 6. This shows the dimension in which Rockstar Games is now working. Even when compared with the most expensive films and series it becomes clear: both could be achieved with the budget of GTA 6.

The costs are even in the range of gross domestic product (GDP) smaller countries and island states:

  • San Marino: approximately $2 billion
  • Solomon Islands: approximately $1.7 billion
  • Comoros: approximately $1.4 billion
  • Grenada: approximately $1.4 billion
  • Samoa: approximately $1.1 billion

Development time further inflates costs

Another decisive factor in the high costs of development is the exceptionally long development time of GTA 6. According to Business Insider, some of the thousands of Rockstar employees work there for more than ten years now at the game.

This makes GTA 6 one of the longest and most complex development projects in gaming history. The long development time explains why the budget has continued to increase over the years – and why the game arouses such high expectations.

What do the high costs mean for the selling price?

The enormous production costs inevitably raise the question of the subsequent selling price. Analysts mostly assume that GTA 6 will cost more than $70. Some even consider prices of $80 to $100 to be realistic. There are no estimates for the German market yet, but GTA 6 actually seems to be cheaper than expected.

An analyst at Bank of America publicly recommended a price of 80 dollarsto set a new pricing standard in the industry. Industry experts also point out that game prices have barely increased over the years, even though budgets have exploded. This is one of the main reasons for DLCs, microtransactions and live service models in the AAA market.
