Golden Ax: An animated series in preparation – News

After the success of Sonic in the cinema with two films, Sega has set itself the objective of continuing the development of its licenses outside of video games. With a TV series dedicated to Knuckles for April 26 and Sonic 3 still planned for the end of the year, the Japanese company does not seem to want to slow down. To do this, it can count on its latest recruitment, a former Disney executive to lead the charge, and on Golden Ax, the Mega Drive's iconic hack 'n slash, as a new license to be revitalized. An important project for Sega, which had already tried in 2004 to launch an adaptation of the game, at the same time as those of other of its licenses such as Shinobi or Streets of Rage.

Golden Ax with humor

The little information given on the project clearly indicates that the tone of this animated series Golden Ax will be purely humorous. If ever its broadcast on Comedy Central wasn't an obvious enough clue, it's the Mike McMahan/Joe Chandler duo who will be in charge. The first worked on Rick & Mortyco-created Solar Opposites as well as Star Trek: Lower Deckswhile the second was producer for American Dad and screenwriter for the animated series Napoleon Dynamite. In short, a great track record for the American humorous animated series. With only ten episodes, the series will tell the journey of veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderbeard and the young and inexperienced Hampton Squib to save Yuria from the immortal and evil Death Adder. We are even entitled to a first official description of this small troupe with their respective associated actors:

  • Liam McIntyre will play Ax Battler, a barbaric warrior with a strict code of honor and a gentle golden retriever demeanor. His muscles trump his brain, but his heart trumps his muscles.
  • Lisa Gilroy will play Tyris Flare, a formidable witch, deadly in combat and even deadlier with her caustic humor.
  • Matthew Rhys will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy warrior dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a sense of inferiority that makes him short-tempered.
  • Danny Pudi will play Hampton Squib, a naive and inexperienced adventurer who has dreamed of going on a quest his whole life. He hopes his positive attitude can make up for his inability to actually do anything.
  • Carl Tart will play Chronos “Evil” Lait, originally from “Golden Ax III”, a 100% badass humanoid panther. At least that's how Chronos describes himself. In reality, he's uncomfortably cheesy and doesn't know how to gauge his audience.
