A flamethrower guitar created from scratch

Mad Max: Furiosa was released in theaters yesterday. Enough to see if the public's enthusiasm is similar to that of the press, rave after the first broadcast of Georges Miller's feature film at the Cannes Film Festival. A film that would not have the same flavor without a man, who we do not see for a single second during the film: This is Colin Gibson. The latter is the chief responsible behind the creation of the tailor-made cars of Furiosa but also of Fury Road, the official designer of the Mad Max saga.

Thanks to the long interview he gives to Automobile Magazine, we quickly understand why Colin Gibson quickly hooked up with director Georges Miller. He returns in particular to Mad Max: Fury Road, for which he won an Oscar and a Bafta, and the design of the character of the artist iOTA.

George wanted to create a degenerate character. A man who had managed to survive in this crazy world even though he was blind. The only presence at his side was a guitar. It was the artist Iota who embodied this character. We had put it on a vehicle going at full speed with dozens of amplifiers around it, well secured! A huge sound system.

An impressively staged scene if you are interested in the car on which iOTA plays. Colin Gibson specifies that it is a former military rocket launch vehicle!

No special effects

But the most impressive thing remains the guitar used for the scene in question… if we can consider that it is still a guitar. In fact, Colin Gibson insists: It's also a flamethrower! A requirement imposed by the director which seems to suit him.

He doesn't like things that don't work. In the past I've built things for him that I thought were just props. He would come up to me and say, “Okay, plug them in now! One of my priorities in my job is to make sure these vehicles are operational.

It is probably this requirement that makes Mad Max, too, a popular science fiction saga. All manufactured machines actually run. There are therefore no special effects, which makes the staging all the more spectacular as it was not created.
