Update from December 16, 2024: Anyone who visited a GameStop store on the third weekend of Advent will notice that clearance sales are in full swing – the stores are packed. Many customers take advantage of the opportunity to secure new items and remaining stock in advance – figures and fan items are particularly popular.
The German GameStop stores (see list below) were open for the last time on January 30th, 2025 – the online shop is only open until January 10th. The 'GameStop Späti' with a changing range in Bikini Berlin closes at the end of the year, shortly after the holidays.
Update from December 13, 2024: Vouchers, repairs, pre-orders, warranty services: The impending closure of GameStop stores and online shops raises a lot of questions – you will find answers in this article.
Update from December 9, 2024: The clearance sale officially starts today, Monday, in the online shop and in around 70 GameStop branches throughout Germany: The company is advertising discounts of 10 percent on new and used products (details).
Report from December 5, 2024: For years, the black and red GameStop logo was part of the inventory of heavily frequented shopping centers and pedestrian zones. In addition to factory-fresh consoles, gamepads and games, the purchase and sale of used goods was one of the most important pillars.
This era ends on January 31, 2025: At the end of last week it was announced that almost 70 GameStop stores nationwide would be closed. Although GameStop Deutschland GmbH has not yet officially commented on the process, according to consistent information, both employees and suppliers have been informed about these plans.
GameStop has already massively thinned out its branch network in 2023: A year later, less than half of almost 160 stores remained. The greatest density of stores was recently in the Ruhr area and the greater Berlin area. Even the German headquarters in Memmingen, Bavaria, was relocated to neighboring Tannheim in Baden-Württemberg; 50 of the 120 employees lost their jobs. Staff were also cut in the camp.
The result: While the number of GameStop employees was almost 1,100 in the 2022/23 financial year, the editorial team confirmed a number of 500 employees nationwide when asked in the summer of 2024. This meant that GameStop was still considered the fourth largest employer in the German games industry – after Nintendo, Ubisoft and the Embracer locations.
