Better known for the back of its heroine than for its qualities as an action game, Stellar Blade is being talked about again through its director, Hyung-Tae Kim. In a recent grant to Famitsuthe man recommends that players wear “as many clothes as possible” during their game… The developer here refers to the combination Skin Suit by Eve, the main character, which increases the damage received at the cost of an even lighter outfit. “The difficulty of the game increases drastically” in this configuration, says the game director.

A defense… questionable

Scheduled for April 26, 2024 exclusively on PS5: Stellar Blade was recently the subject of a demo which suggests good things. In our preview we spoke of a “promising experience” with an edginess “that few titles can boast of” | “intuitive and devastating” gameplay. However, these good points continue to be obscured by the plastic qualities of the heroine – Eve – at the heart of discussions that are sometimes sordid, sometimes controversial. In February, at GamesRadar, Hyung-Tae Kim added fuel to the fire, explaining that the team had taken “very special” care to the back of the character: “The player always does facing the back of the character when he plays, that's what they see the most (…) I don't want to see something normal, I want to see something more ideal. I think it's very important in a form of entertainment”.

Past controversies

Arguments that leave one wondering, especially when we know the controversies which recently affected Shift Up, the studio which develops Stellar Blad (where Hyung-Tae Kim serves as director). Last year, according to testimonies published on X, the company allegedly fired female developers for making feminist remarks. A similar case would have occurred in 2022. In the latter case, it is the use of the hashtag Megalia, a feminist activity group in South Korea, which would be in question.
