Game Company’s Removal of 20 Years of Content Leaves Fans Disappointed

Nintendo has a hard tooth. We don't play as we want with Big N characters and the Japanese multinational intends to remind us of this by removing content from yet another game.

Once is not custom, Nintendo get on his high horse. Certainly, last year, the Japanese giant won an exceptional case against piracy. But it is above all renowned for standing up to the use of its intellectual properties by third parties without prior agreement. So Big N didn't hesitate and struck again.

For years, Nintendo has been at war over the protection of its copyrights (or, to be precise, its DMCAs). Thus, the publisher and consoler endeavored to bring down all the unauthorized creations which would exploit its characters, design and other content belonging to it. We remember, among many others, the Maricar case. As of yesterday, we can add another game to the list of Big N victims.

A very popular Steam game in Nintendo's sights

There are thousands of pieces of content that are destined to disappear from the Steam Workshop Garry's Mod. This sandbox game allowing almost total freedom to its users was filled with mods featuring recreations of Mario, Luigi, Zelda, Kirby and other Nintendo mascots.

The Facepunch studio announced the news directly on the Steam page of the game. Highlighting the disappearance of certain content linked to Nintendo, he declared that this came directly from the request of the Japanese publisher. But he plays it fair, acknowledging that “ it's fair enough. This is Nintendo content and what they allow or don't allow is up to them “.

In this sense, the studio says it wants to respect this request. Otherwise, it should be noted that it is a trial in due form that would be waiting for him around the corner. And, given the precedents, Nintendo would not let the matter go. It could cost Facepunch dearly to attempt retention.

However, it will take time to remove all problematic content. The studio reminds that these are twenty years of creation which are going up in smoke. So, to support them in this long-term process, he solicits the goodwill of the players: “ If you would like to assist us by deleting your Nintendo-related downloads and never downloading them again, that would be a great help to us. “.

It's a page that is turning for Garry's Mod. Obviously, the mods of the game were not only based on Nintendo's creations, but with thousands of occurrences, we cannot deny that they had a strong hold in the imagination of its community. Unfortunately, it will have to take its inspiration elsewhere from now on.
