The flower that cost 3 million

CGC Cards, a playing card grading company, announced the news on Instagram. A game card Magic: The Gathering has just been sold at auction for no less than 3 million dollars! Said collector's item is none other than a Black Lotus, an extremely rare card sinceonly present in the first base sets of Magic: The Gathering more precisely in the Alpha set from 1993.

Due to its rarity, the card is known to quickly see its sale price soar. In 2021, a Black Lotus signed by its designer – Christopher Rush – was soared for $511,100 during auctions. And in 2023, two more copies also sold respectively for $540,000 and $615,000. But even combined, the sums of these three cards still do not come close to last week's transaction, which took the opportunity to dethrone the transaction carried out by rapper Post Malone a little less than a year ago .

A card to make them all drool

In fact, it is in 2023 that rapper Post Malone acquired the One Ring card which, like the object it represents, only exists in a single copy covered with gold leaf and being entirely written in the Elvish language. First obtained by a player named Brook Trafton, he wanted to sell the card directly to another Magic player and collector.

When I found the One Ring, the first person that came to mind was Post Malone. I've been playing Magic: The Gathering since I was a kid and it would obviously be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life-changing. I was really hoping it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I did, and my dream came true.

Meeting Post Malone and selling him the card is literally a moment straight out of a fairy tale. Things like that don't happen to people like me, I guess it's magic. I am forever grateful. – Book Trafton (TikTok)

After this sale, the company Wizards of the Coast, which deals with the Magic card game, declared that it had “seen and re-watched the clip on social media” and being “delighted that two real fans shared this moment and that we could be a small part of it”.
