The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed several changes that it says will make it easier for consumers to cancel recurring service subscriptions.
Here are the basic requirements:
• a subscription should be as easy to cancel as it is to subscribe; for example, if you can register online, you should be able to cancel your subscription on the same site in the same number of steps
• Merchants should ask users if they would like additional features if they cancel their subscription (they cannot be forced); if the client refuses, you must immediately display a button to unsubscribe
• sellers should be reminded in advance that the subscription will end soon and should be canceled if the user does not plan to renew it
The FTC will begin accepting comments on these proposals in the near future for future adjustments.
