Red Bull Kumite, a Street Fighter tournament, is back for a 9th edition and for the occasion a France Qualifier edition has been organized. The goal is to nominate a French player to represent his country during the grand final which will take place in New York. The qualifications took place on February 4 online and the 8 best competed on February 11 in physical form at Concorde Atlantique in Paris. At the end of the tournament, the greatest French hope was crowned.

An impressive level

The ninth edition of Red Bull Kumite takes place on Street Fighter 6, and after competitive qualifications, the top 8 players in the tournament competed to determine a winner. France has always seen a lot of talent born and notably has two “world champions” in the Street Fighter license. French fans of fighting games will never forget Luffy’s big victory at Evo 2014 on Street Fighter 4, but since then, there is a new star who has a string of impressive results, it is Mister Crimson, who won the grail during the 8th edition of Redbull Kumite in London in 2021 on the 5th opus. It is also the latter who will interest us since he became the big winner of the tournament which interests us today. He is ahead of players like Kilzyou, Cammy’s player, as well as Kusanagi considered the “little brother” of the Street community and who since the release of the sixth opus of Street Fighter has shown the full extent of his talent with Luke. Nathan “Mister Crimson” Massol will therefore represent France with his Dhalsim in New York to try to reach the final and have the eyes of the world on him again. He thus joins Valmaster, a long-time player within the French Street Fighter community who particularly impressed during his performance at Redbull Kumite 2015.

A rise in French power in fighting games

If Mister Crimson is the Frenchman in form and to follow on Street Fighter 6 at the moment, the other fighting games also have their national champion. Smash Bros has been supported by its community since the Melee episode to become a staple of versus fighting esports. But in France, it is since Super Smash Bros Brawl that the greatest French champion has emerged: William Belaid known as “Glutonny”. In 2022, he notably became the first European to win a tournament on American soil in the history of Smash, on Ultimate. Another game where France is very present is DragonBall FighterZ. In 2022, the French Wawa is crowned champion of Evo 2022 on the title, then in turn becoming “world champion”. During the same tournament, his compatriots Yasha and Kayne finished in third and fourth place respectively in the tournament. Between the players who will continue to shine, and the new ones who are emerging, French esports has not finished establishing itself in fighting games.
