The Finnish Foreign Minister said that the country may apply for NATO membership on May 18
Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has named a possible date for Finland’s application for NATO membership. This is reported RIA News.
The Finnish Foreign Minister told when and how the country will apply to the alliance. “It will be our NATO ambassador in Brussels who will do it physically, probably on Wednesday (May 18 – approx. “Tapes.ru”). Then, if negotiations with NATO begin, they will be dealt with by delegations led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense,” he said.
The minister also said that Finland is preparing for a possible Russian reaction, “traditional military threats”, to its actions.
The Finnish minister also stressed that he was pleased with the passage of a similar process in Sweden.
Earlier, Finland and Sweden wanted to apply for NATO membership at the same time. They are expected to make a decision on the application on May 15.
The states announced their intention to join the North Atlantic Alliance after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. Russia has been conducting a special military operation since February 24.
