In November, Rockstar Games released a major update to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Definitive Edition. A graphic analysis by Digital Foundry reveals what has changed graphically and in terms of performance.
At the launch in November 2021, the fought Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Definitive Edition with numerous technical problems and errors.
After the developers made improvements with various updates in the months after the release, a few months ago another big update. Among other things, this paved the way for the classic lighting mode to reach consoles and PCs. But what influence did the last update and the lighting mode in question have on the overall graphical appearance of the included classics “GTA 3”, “GTA: San Andreas” and “GTA: Vice City”?
This question is examined in a detailed graphic analysis by Digital Foundry.
New lighting mode leads to a more harmonious experience
According to Digital Foundry editors, the classic lighting mode on consoles and PC ensures that the classics included in “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Definitive Edition” are closer in terms of ambience and atmosphere to their originals.
According to Digital Foundry, this is particularly clear in “GTA: San Andreas”, which is now finally optically based on its popular original and captures its charm. But “GTA 3” and “GTA: Vice City” also benefit from the update.
As the analysis continues, Digital Foundry highlights graphic effects such as the fog or the ambient lighting, which finally convey a feeling of size and distance again. However, the volumetric clouds from previous versions are still missing. Another area in which the developers improved is general performance.
Both the quality mode with its 30 FPS and the performance mode with 60 FPS achieve the target frame rates largely stable after the update in November. The frame rate only drops slightly during particularly intense action.
Further updates are necessary
Despite the improvements offered, according to Digital Foundry, we are still far from calling “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Definitive Edition” a perfect gaming experience. Various problems arose after the last update, especially in “GTA: San Andreas”.
These include a low density of details, which is particularly noticeable when flying, or incorrect light emissions from vehicles. Digital Foundry also criticizes the upscaled AI graphics material, which can lead to poorer graphics and texture representation.
According to the graphics analysis, “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Definitive Edition” still needs further updates and improvements.
