FD: Ministry talks with Rivian about possible factory in the Netherlands

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate is in talks with car manufacturer Rivian for the construction of a possible factory in the Netherlands. The ministry confirms this to the Financieele Dagblad.

A spokesperson tells the FD that the ministry would like to see the car manufacturer come to the Netherlands. “The cabinet is committed to this, just like it is to attract other foreign investments in our country,” said the spokesman. The factory is said to be worth more than a billion pounds, according to the newspaper.

Nothing further is known about the possible production facility. The ministry does not go into specifics about this, because of confidentiality. For example, it is not yet clear where this should be placed. Rivian himself does not respond to the FD either.

The Financial Times found out earlier this week that Rivian has been active in the Netherlands for at least a year. The company has two Amsterdam subsidiaries, Rivian Europe and Rivian Netherlands, which employ ‘at least’ twenty people.

Rivian has previously confirmed it plans to sell electric cars in Europe from 2022. Therefore, it would like to build a new factory in the region. Bloomberg reported earlier this year that Germany and Hungary would also be considered as a location, in addition to the United Kingdom. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would interfere ‘personally’ with those talks, the FD wrote earlier this week.

Rivian was founded in 2009 in the US and focuses on the production of electric vehicles. The company is currently working on a pickup truck and an SUV. In 2019, Amazon and Ford invested in Rivian. Ford wants to use the manufacturer’s platform for its own vehicles, and Amazon has placed an order for 100,000 Rivian vans.
