Far Cry 7 shakes everything up: New leak reveals PvPvE, weapon wear and more

Ubisoft is currently making headlines more with internal problems than with new games. Almost four and a half years after the release of Far Cry 6, fans are still waiting for official information about Far Cry 7. Since Ubisoft has kept a low profile so far, the current state of knowledge is based on leaks, insider reports and data mining.

Project Blackbird: Far Cry 7 under time pressure

Internally, Far Cry 7 will be codenamed “Project Blackbird”. Several leaks indicate that Ubisoft wants to clearly say goodbye to the classic Far Cry formula. The core of the new concept is a permanent time limit mechanic that determines game progress.

Insiders report 72 in-game hours, which corresponds to around 24 hours of real playing time. Within this time window you have to save your kidnapped family from the hands of a fanatical cult. The “true ending” of the story should only be unlocked if the rescue is complete. The countdown runs constantly and can only be paused in safehouses.

A leaked audio clip substantiates these rumors: You can hear a constantly increasing clock ticking, accompanied by threatening music. A clear signal of a dense, stressful atmosphere.

A new leak from the well-known Ubisoft data miner RogueTx now provides further details about the gameplay. Accordingly, Far Cry 7 should not only be under time pressure, but for the first time PvPvE extraction approach set. According to the data mining findings, players join forces online in squads to protect a total of six family members from the group’s hands “Sons of Truth” to liberate. However, it is currently unclear whether this mode replaces the main campaign or merely serves as an optional multiplayer component.

Breaking with the Ubisoft formula

Despite time pressure, the mission design should not be linear. You can decide for yourself in which order you save family members. However, the timer remains permanently active and forces you to prioritize. This system is reminiscent of titles like Dead Rising and would represent a radical break with the previous one “Play at your own pace”philosophy of the series – the biggest since Far Cry 3.

This could be particularly problematic for open world fans and completists, as exploration, outposts and side quests directly compete with the progress of the main story.

New technology, new gameplay

Technically, Far Cry 7 should based on the Snowdrop enginewhich is already used in The Division and Star Wars Outlaws. A more dynamic open world, more tactical movement with slide and climbing mechanics, a revised loot system and a more realistic animal world are planned. Efficient planning and resource management could become more important than simply processing map markers.

In addition, the new data mining finds speak of several survival mechanics. Weapons should only have a limited shelf life, safehouses serve as important places of refuge and aggressive wild animals such as wolves or grizzly bears make exploration even more difficult. That would go much more in the direction of survival than all previous series parts.

Particularly exciting: The combination of time limit, resource management and extraction gameplay is reminiscent of hardcore shooters like Escape from Tarkov. If Ubisoft actually integrates these mechanics into the main campaign, it would probably be the biggest change in the entire Far Cry series to date.

Data miners leak potential screenshots

The biggest leak to date about Far Cry 7 took place in November 2025. A well-known XDefiant dataminer named AgaiinTX found Potential screenshots and assets in the code of the Ubisoft shooter, which will be discontinued in 2024 to Far Cry 7.

The screenshots show, among other things, scoreboards, a buggy racing track and possibly the protagonist with a beard and a cap. The Extraction mode map called “Paradise Park” appears to be set in Alaska and is inhabited by aggressive animals.

But text strings also seem to spoil story missions in Far Cry 7: terms like Airspace, NASA HQ, JFK Center or Ronald Reagan appear. The leaks and rumors may come from older builds of “Project Talisker,” a previous internal working title for Far Cry.

Has the release been postponed internally?

According to rumors and speculation from insiders, the release of Far Cry 7 was announced internally by Fall 2025 postponed to late 2026 or early 2027. In its latest leak, the data miner RogueTx also names an internal release period between 2026 and 2027.

The new information therefore largely corresponds to previous insider reports. There are many reasons for this: Ubisoft was in financial crisis in 2024/2025 and then cut off around 3,000 employees.

The focus in the future should be on fewer new releases, but the quality of the games should improve. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the following in an earnings call:

Quote:
“Following an internal pipeline review, some of our biggest productions have been postponed (…) Significant content from our largest brands will land in FY26/27 & FY27/28.”

In the period of April 2026 to March 2028 So big brands from Ubisoft should make their comeback. In addition to Far Cry 7, this could also be a potential release of The Division 3.

As Ubisoft’s first-person shooter at the time of publishing this article not even announced a release in 2026 seems very unlikely. It’s quite possible that we’ll have to wait until 2027 for a new Far Cry.
