The series adaptation of the Fallout games tells its own story, but in many places it is closely related to the original. For example, the story of the New Californian Republic (NCR), which we know from Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, is continued.

The last episodes of the series in particular brought worry lines to the foreheads of many fans, as it almost seemed as if the NCR no longer existed. But Todd Howard gives in an interview now all clear.

Beware, spoilers: If you haven't seen the series yet, then it's best not to read any further and instead watch our spoiler-free video:

Where is the NCR?

The faction, which was previously very present in California, does not initially appear in the series. But we find out more in later episodes: The former capital of the NCR, Shady Sands, was completely destroyed by a bomb. Survivors now live in Vault 4 or joined Moldaver's group. And she suffers a devastating defeat in the season finale.

We don't find out in season 1 how or whether the rest of the NCR survived the destruction of the capital. Some fans therefore suspected that the faction was now history. But according to Bethesda chief developer Todd Howard, that's far from being said:

Something we always do with Fallout is approach things from a very local perspective. We are careful to say what is happening in other parts of the world. And we always look at it from the perspective that communication is difficult.

The NCR in particular, whose area extends far beyond California, can still exist in other places. Howard also emphasizes this:

And if you look at the background, the NCR is a wide-ranging organization and group not only in California but other places as well. So the series focuses on this time and this group here, and that's all we can say for now. But I don't think you've heard the last of the NCR.

Of course, Todd Howard doesn't want to comment specifically on the second season of the series. However, his statements make it clear that the NCR has hardly simply disappeared from the face of the earth. Since the series will most likely take us to New Vegas next, we're sure to learn more about the history of the NCR in Season 2.
